Ford partners with Amazon to sell certified preowned cars

Ford Motor has struck a new partnership with Amazon that will allow the automaker’s franchised dealerships to sell certified preowned vehicles directly through the online retailer. The companies announced Monday that the initiative will let customers browse inventory, secure financing, begin paperwork and schedule pickup times at participating Ford dealers.

While most of the purchase process can be completed online, Ford noted that some steps such as final signatures may still need to be handled in person. The arrangement expands Amazon’s growing presence in automotive retail and offers Ford dealers another channel to reach digital-first buyers.

Expansion of Amazon’s auto marketplace

The partnership follows Amazon’s 2022 announcement that it would begin allowing dealerships to sell cars on its platform, starting with new vehicles from Hyundai. The Ford agreement differs because it focuses on certified preowned vehicles rather than new models. These CPO units are used cars that have undergone formal inspections, refurbishing and manufacturer-backed certification, offering stronger warranties and quality assurances than typical used vehicles.

Amazon earlier this year partnered with Hertz to help sell used rental cars online. With Ford joining the platform, Amazon Autos gains access to a large pipeline of certified vehicles and expands its footprint in key metro markets.

Dealers join the program across major U.S. cities

Ford said more than 160 of its roughly 2,900 U.S. dealerships have already begun onboarding with Amazon, and about a dozen stores have formally launched on the platform. Another 10 dealerships are expected to go live next week. “The addition of Ford certified pre-owned vehicles to Amazon Autos represents an exciting expansion of our store,” said Fan Jin, global leader of Amazon Autos, highlighting Ford’s inspection and warranty benefits.

The automaker is offering buyers a 14-day or 1,000-mile money-back guarantee, whichever comes first. Ford will also provide three tiers of CPO certification with varying warranty levels, giving customers multiple options based on their budget and desired coverage.

Regulatory ease supports online sales of used vehicles

Ford’s certified preowned inventory is now live on Amazon Autos in Los Angeles, Seattle and Dallas, with additional cities planned in the months ahead. Unlike new-vehicle sales, which are tightly regulated by state franchise laws, used-car sales face far fewer restrictions. That regulatory flexibility has helped online platforms such as Carvana and Hertz grow rapidly by allowing them to sell preowned vehicles directly to consumers without dealer intermediaries.

Despite Amazon’s involvement, franchised dealers remain the final seller under the Ford partnership, keeping the arrangement compliant with state laws. For Ford, the move broadens its digital reach in a market where convenience and online purchasing tools continue to influence buying behavior.
