US Navy Intervenes in Seizure of Israel-Linked Tanker Amid Rising Gulf Tensions

Date:

In a daring high-seas incident, armed assailants temporarily commandeered the Liberian-flagged tanker Central Park, which is linked to Israel, off the Yemeni coast on Sunday. The seizure, occurring in the geopolitically tense Gulf of Aden, was short-lived due to a swift response by the United States Navy. Officials report that the U.S. Navy’s mediation led to the capture of the attackers, even as the situation escalated with missile fire from Houthi-controlled Yemen.

“The swift action by coalition forces has thwarted a blatant act of maritime piracy,” a statement by Zodiac Maritime, the managing company, highlighted the international efforts to protect maritime assets and enforce the law of the sea.

Yemen’s government has pointed the finger at the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels for the incident. However, the Houthis have not claimed responsibility for either the ship’s seizure or the subsequent missile launch. In the wake of the attack, two ballistic missiles plunged into the sea close to a U.S. warship engaged in the rescue operation, fortunately without causing harm or damage.

Daniel Guy Ofer of Zodiac Maritime expressed gratitude towards the coalition forces for their quick response, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding international maritime routes.

Despite the tensions and the recent history of ship attacks in the region, this incident stands out for its direct involvement of U.S. forces and the proximity of missile threats to U.S. assets, signifying a potential escalation in the ongoing shadow conflict between Iran and Israel.

While the vessel and its diverse crew of 22 sailors remain unharmed, the event underscores the precarious security situation in the Gulf of Aden. It also highlights the growing risk to global shipping in the area, a flashpoint for regional hostilities with far-reaching implications.
